BBB tips for finding a trustworthy physician
MONROE, Louisiana – May 8,2013 – This is National Nurse’s Week and as we recognize those dedicated to the health care profession, your Better Business Bureau wants to make sure you know how to find the right health care provider.
According to StateHealthFacts.org there are more than 800,000 physicians in the United States. With almost 400,000 primary care physicians and the remainder specialist physicians, choosing the right provider can be daunting.
Since January 2012, BBB received over 500 complaints nationwide against family practice physicians. Complaints alleged problems with billing and the release of private information without the patient’s consent.
If you’re considering a primary care physician, BBB has these recommendations:
- Do your research: Checkbbb.org for a BBB Business Reviews on physicians in your area. Also, insurance companies, health maintenance organizations, and managed care plans usually have a panel of physicians from which to select.
- Check licensing: After obtaining the names of possible doctors, check to make sure that they are properly licensed and have clear records. You can find out this information online from your state medical boards or by fax or phone call.
- Know your rights: Doctors must show you your medical records and X-rays at any time at your request. Doctors may not reveal personal information about you without your consent except as required by law. Doctors may not order you to receive excessive tests or treatments.
- To file a complaint: You can file complaints at bbb.org regarding billing or customer service issues. If you have a malpractice complaint against a doctor, you can file with the Louisiana Medical Board.
